The difference between grade 317 and 317L is the percentage of carbon in their chemical composition. This difference in chemical composition is the deciding factor for a welded alloy grade. Since the content of carbon in 317L Stainless Steel Sheet is low, it is used for welding.
The lower content of carbon promotes weldability, as the lack of carbon discourages the formation of chromium carbide precipitates. Thus using a low carbon version i.e. grade 317L Stainless Steel Plate for welding prevents intergranular corrosion. Another variation of grade 317 is the 317Lmn Stainless Steel Sheet, which contains a higher content of molybdenum and nitrogen in comparison to 317L.
